Salvador
Salvador (Sal-vah-dor) is the capital city of the State of Bahia (Bah-eee-ah) which means “Bay.” With 3.5 million people, it is Brazil’s 3rd largest city and the economic hub of the northeast of the county. This port city is one of Brazil’s oldest, which can still be seen in the colonial architecture.
Salvador means “Savior,” and it is truly a special place. When Brazilians talk about Salvador it is as though they are speaking of an old friend. “Aahhh, Salvador…”, and then a smile appears on their face and their eyes look off into memory.
The food, the culture, the music and the very nature of this friendly place come from its African roots. Indeed the majority of the people in Salvador are of African descent and the culture and traditions continue to this day.
The food is rich and spicy, the music is heavy with African drums and the people are always wearing a wide smile. Salvador is probably the most laid back large city in the world.
