Curitiba
Curitiba (Koo-ree-chee-bah) is the largest city in the south of Brazil. It is the capital city of the state of Paraná and home to around 2 million people inside the city and well over 3 million in the metropolitan area.
Residing in the south means that its population is made up mainly of European immigrants from Italy, Portugal and Germany. Curitiba also has the second largest Japanese population in Brazil.
The city is set in a marshland area so the air is moist and it gets a bit cold at night, especially in the winter. The cold is also due to the high altitude of the city. The landscape is also different from the rest of Brazil. The southern region is more European looking because of the cold climate but it is still semi-tropical. This mix, along side the many rivers in the area, make for beautiful scenery.
Curitiba itself is a beautiful city. There are botanical gardens, many parks, squares and even forests. For this, it is well respected as an ecologically-friendly and very green city. It is also a major feet of urban planning.
The economy is based on commerce, the service industry and manufacturing. There are many automotive plants in Curitiba and it is a popular area for Brazilian investors. The per capita income is one of the highest in Brazil and the standard of living is as well.
With its European descendants and the cold weather one would think that Curitiba was located elsewhere. However, one step inside the Brazilian Popular Music Conservatory and you will remember right where you are. MPB, as it is called, is the folk music of Brazil. Of the many popular names to be mentioned, one could look into “Chico Buarque,” to hear the sound of this enchanting music. Indeed, Curitiba is Brazilian, but with its own flavors from abroad.
Curititiba lies between Sao Paulo and Florianopolis and is definitely worth a visit as you travel down south. Arriving by bus is easy.

When speaking to a Portuguese speaker you can just say: Rodoviaria Curitiba or
(Hodo-vee-are-ee-ah Koo-ree-chee-bah)
The bus station has 35 bus companies running over 140 national and international bus routes. The station is located in front of the Municipal Market. This means that on arrival you can step right into shopping and sightseeing. The station itself has luncheonettes and stores and the basic amenities. There are ATM machines, mail service, Wi-Fi, luncheonettes, small stores and more inside the station.
