The Fernando de Noronha archipelago regularly occupies the top rankings of the most beautiful islands and beaches in the world. Have we encouraged you already to visit this beautiful place? 🙂 If not, just read a few facts about it and hopefully – buy the tickets and have the best time of your life.
Fernando de Noronha is an archipelago of 21 islands in the Atlantic Ocean. It has a volcanic origin with a total area of 26 km2 – 17 km2 is the largest island. Noronha has located 360 km from Natal and 545 km from Recife. Administratively, it belongs to the state of Pernambuco.
The archipelago was discovered at the beginning of the 16th century and received a name in honor of its explorer, Ferṇo de Loronha Рwhose name was turned into Noronha and so it remained. During the French and Dutch invasion of Brazil between the 16th and 18th centuries, the islands were also interesting for them, but eventually, the Portuguese managed to recapture the archipelago and maintain control over it. During World War II, there was a military base there, in which Americans were stationed. American forces maintained a missile tracking base there until 1959 Рto this day many places on the island have retained the names given by the Americans.
What to see:
Paths (trilhas) – must be booked at the ICMBio headquarters – it is not easy, because they can only be booked in person (except for paths on which the guide must accompany you) several days in advance. The daily visitor limit applies.Â
The most recommended paths that need to be booked in ICMBio:
Atalaia – a large natural pool in the part of the island of Mar de Fora. You can go a shorter path (Atalaia Curta) without a guide or longer several hours (Atalaia Longa) with a guide. After reaching the place, you have 30 minutes to swim in the pool, of course, in a vest and without touching the bottom with our feet.
Abreu – natural pools, which we reach over a kilometer path, you do not need to rent a guide here,
Capim A̤u Рthe longest path in the park which requires good physical fitness ; you reach a cave with natural pools Рguide required,
Pontinha – Pedra Alta and Caieira – a guided path, again to natural pools.
Sunset is a phenomenon highly anticipated at Fernando de Noronha. This is one of the few places in Brazil where the sun goes down to the sea. Crowds of tourists gather at several points here to admire this beautiful spectacle.
Diving can be practiced by both beginners and advanced here. A mask with a tube will always be useful and is even required in many places (you can rent it).Â
Last but not least – the beautiful beaches. There are a lot of beaches there which are amazing – believe us. The most known ones are the following:
- PraÃa do Sancho
- BaÃa dos Porcos
- Praia da Cacimba do Padre
What to bring with you:
- Sports camera (can be rented on-site),
- T-shirt with a UV filter – remember that you will spend all days in the sun and in some water reservoirs you cannot use sunscreen, so the shirt is very useful,
- More cash – although you can pay by card in many places, there are places where you can only pay with cash,
- Essentials for the beach, i.e. a towel, pareo, Havaianas, sunglasses and a hat,
- Sneakers if you go on longer paths.
If you intend to travel in Brazil, buy your tickets here – it’s better, safer and has the best price for you.
