Placing the capital city far from the coast was done on purpose to develop the inland part of Brazil. The idea of creating the new capital occurred in 1823. The city was founded in a place that was full of lush nature. Impassable terrains hindered the delivery of building materials. That’s why the trucks were turned into airplanes.
The decision about the grand undertaking was made by President Juscelino Kubitschek. Construction in the heart of Brazil began in 1956. Workers from all corners of Brazil came to take part in the creation of the new capital. The work was completed in 1960 and on April 27 the official inauguration began.

The plan of the city (Plano Piloto) was the work of the prominent architect Lúcio Costa and the most important buildings were designed by even more famous architect, Oscar Niemeyer. Costa predicted the city for 500,000 residents, and currently, more than 2 million residents are living in this city.
